Dyneema Strops: The Ultimate Guide to Replacing Stainless Steel Wire Onboard

Dyneema Strops: The Ultimate Guide to Replacing Stainless Steel Wire Onboard

This Dyneema strop is made from RIG 12 Dyneema core with a 12-strand construction and comes in three rope diameters: 4mm (break load 1300kg), 5mm (break load 2600kg), and 6mm (break load 4300kg). Eye lengths are 20mm and 30mm for 4mm, and 30mm and 50mm for both 5mm and 6mm. Break loads are for guidance only, as they refer to unspliced D12.

Each loop end features a Brummel Lock Splice, with tails threaded through the rope’s core, sewn, and whipped to lock the loops and distribute load evenly. Perfect for attaching blocks to booms, pad eyes, mast bases, toe rails, or mainsheet traveller systems, these strops have different-sized loops for adding aluminium thimbles. Custom lengths are available on request.

Benefits over traditional hardware include significant weight savings, no risk of metal wear or deck damage, silent operation, and resistance to corrosion or seizing. Common uses range from mainsheet traveller horses and boom attachments to securing life rafts, with racers valuing weight reduction and cruisers enjoying reliability. Regular inspection is essential—watch for fuzzing, discoloration, chafe, or heat damage, as Dyneema has a low melting point.
